As your child explores the world around them, they will try to learn about it the only way they can. Through picking things up, putting them in their mouth and utilising their other senses. It’s during this stage that they begin to build their fine motor skills and continually after, they will continue to strengthen them. This is important as they are the skills that they will need for everyday life. To hold, pinch and grip. They are movements that require the smaller muscles of the body and are developed through practice. If you would like to learn about the different types of exercises that you can do, keep reading.

This post is in collaboration with a girls school in London.

Bath Time

As a way of distracting your child whilst you bathe them, you might decide to introduce squeezy bath toys which they can play with. They can also be used for practising fine motor skills as they will need to squeeze them to shoot and load water.

Gardening

Another fun way that you can build this particular set of skills is through gardening. Holding, pinching, and gripping skills are needed throughout, to dig and pot plants. It’s also very educational as it teaches children about how food is grown and plant biology.

Painting

Crafting can be a great way to boost your child’s creativity as they will have the opportunity to recreate their ideas and design whatever they want. Fine motor skills are also strengthened in the process as they will need to hold, grip, and use careful hand-eye coordination.

Rice Race

You can get involved in this one. You can play a game to see who can collect the most rice and transfer it into a separate bowl before time runs out.

Post-it Toys

These are toys that children can “post” or “push” through a larger toy. They will need the right sized pieces for this to work which can also teach them about shape and help them in maths.
