Reading ability is one of the most important skills that your child will need to build. They will need it for all of their subjects at school as well as in their day-to-day life when they encounter street signs etc. If your child’s struggling to read, we have just the tips for you from an early years educator. Take a look at them below.

Start with Phonetics

If you’re not familiar with phonetics, they are the building blocks that your child will need to start reading. They are the sounds that letters make and are used to help children blend letters together and make words. “C” for example is “cuh” and should only be referred to by its phonetic sound to avoid confusion while children are learning to read.

Phonetics Songs

Song lyrics are surprisingly easy for us to remember which is why, thanks to parents and teachers, we have phonetics songs. They cover the entire alphabet and can help children to master their sounds and move on to reading.

Letter Toys

There are many out there that have also been developed to help children with their reading. You can find everything from toy laptops to phonetics snap cards. If your child is one that’s difficult to engage, this may just do the trick and help them to move forwards with their reading.

Read Together

Story time before bed is a good idea as it helps children to unwind and drift off to sleep. It also creates a regular time in the day for your child to practice reading and improve. Even if they’re not at the stage yet to try and read, there are huge benefits to reading to your child. They can pick up new words, become familiar with them and what they look like written out.
