There’s more that we can all be doing to protect the environment and paying attention to how we individually contribute is an important part of preserving it for future generations. While climate change is a global issue that’s been going on for some decades, the actions that we collectively take add up and can help to slow down its effects. Whether that be supporting sustainable brands, reducing our energy consumption, or spreading awareness and passing knowledge down to our children.
Below are ideas that were shared with us by private schools in Harrow on how to encourage children to be more environmentally conscious.
Understanding Climate Change
Climate change can be hard for children to get their head around, especially living here in the UK where we’re fortunate enough to not really feel its effects. It can seem like an imaginary concept when in reality it’s endangering dozens of countries and the animal kingdom. Children love being told stories and there are books that cover and break down climate change in a way that is understandable and easy to follow. This can help them to see why the work that you’re doing is so important and feel passionate about protecting the planet too.

Grow Your Own
The food chain is very long winded. The journey from farm to fork often involves thousands of miles, wasting finite resources and emitting greenhouse gases. An easy way to cut down would be to grow your own. It teaches children about self-sufficiency and gives you something to do with the kids.
Recycle, Reduce and Reuse
These 3 R’s are easy to remember and implement. It’s a great little framework to teach children. To help the planet, we can all recycle things like plastic that contribute to pollution, reduce our waste and reuse so that we don’t need to worry about depleting the earth of its resources.
