As STEM subjects often encompass one of the most important subject areas for children, parents should aim to incorporate a lot of these themes outside of their school life. So here’s some tips and advice on how to explore these key subjects with your child from this Nursery in Somerset.

Learning outside

This can be in your garden, on a long walk or in an outdoor area like the Eden Project for example. There are many ways you can show to your child like looking out for bugs and small animals to learn about different species in our local area.

Other ways can be by showing them how to do the gardening, planting vegetables together, showing them different plants in the garden and what wildlife can be attracted to your garden.

Cooking and baking

An inventive way of exploring STEM subjects is by baking cakes. There’s actually a lot of science involved in baking and cooking that your child can learn about throughout the process.

Food has to be set at a certain temperature and the mixing process should be timed and put together correctly in order to achieve the best results. Biscuits and sponge cake are great ways of getting your children involved in not-so-complicated baking activities.

Using different kinds of media

One key area of STEM is technology, so it’s a great way to utilise things you’ll already have at home. TV for instance has a whole host of educational programmes that mention STEM subjects and their importance, as well as films and interactive games you can follow on TV.

Apps are also increasingly popular and even more so in younger generations. A lot of these have an educational purpose that can be good for children to experience in short bursts. These are very stimulating activities for children that will give your child a new perspective on how to understand STEM subjects.
