Children become better learners by developing healthy habits, attitudes and a proper diet. It can seriously be affected if things change, especially at a younger age, and as parents we have to look out for the signs to help and support our children during these changes.

With this guide from this private school in Hertfordshire, we look at what happens if lifestyle choices change in children and how it can impact their studies.

Exercise

Children will have a regular session in school where they can take part in physical education which may be once a week. However, the effects of exercising regularly hugely benefit children. Even if it’s 30 minutes of play time with friends or siblings their mood levels and frame of mind are improved, giving them the chance to achieve better in school.

Suggestions to get your children more active can be to let them walk to school (if it allows), taking a bicycle to school or encourage your child to take up a sports club they can attend each week.

Eating healthy

A nutritious breakfast will be key to your child’s day. Food is good for the brain after all! Avoid having too many sugary or starchy foods in your child’s lunchbox; food heavy in e-numbers and sugar can make them irritable and likely to “crash” within school hours.

Your child will learn about the importance of eating 5 pieces of fruit and veg in school lessons, so try to add 2 – 3 pieces of fruit to their lunchbox. Then you can ensure they get enough nutrients from their dinner in the evenings.

Sleep schedule

The rule of thumb is to sleep for 8 hours of day, but it can actually be more or less depending on how you’re wired. Make sure your child goes to sleep at the same time each night at minimum, being strict on their bedtime will ensure they stick to a good routine.

Sleep improves children’s memory and concentration – both of which are incredibly useful for studying and within the classroom.
