If at first you don’t succeed, try, and try again. The saying promotes resilience – an important skill that’s needed to be successful at anything. It’s unlikely that you will go through life without obstacles in your way and your child will probably experience setbacks in reaching their own goals. While it’s not a nice feeling and can be difficult to pick yourself up from, it can help with developing mental strength and the ability to deal with challenges. We’ve been working with IB schools in Surrey to bring you the tips below on how to raise a resilient child.
Goal Setting
It’s easy to give up, especially when you’ve put so much effort into something and not seen any results. You can become wrapped up in your emotions and not want to try again after being defeated. Having a reminder of why you started can help. It can help you to refocus and give you the motivation to get back up again. It’s a good idea to do this with children before any challenge or goal that they embark on as it will keep them from reaching a plateau and losing hope.

Be a Shining Example
Failure is a part of life and we can’t run from our problems either. Children learn and develop their attitudes based on their parents’ as they are their role models. Despite your setbacks, if you demonstrate that you’re strong and resilient, you can be an inspiration to your child and encourage them to do the same.
Silver Linings
Failure can bring about opportunities and be positive if we choose to look at them that way. Silver linings can help to give children a reason to continue after setbacks that they’ve reached and actually see them as an opportunity.
We hope that these tips help you in building your child’s resilience. For more content like this, keep an eye on our blog!
