There are many benefits to writing. Children can improve on their handwriting and explore their creativity. Journaling is a way that children can make writing a part of their daily routine. Whether that consists of daily reminders or a biographical run-down of their day. It also offers a means of stress-relief as they are able to let out their emotions and frustrations on paper. There are many more benefits to journaling as we’ve gathered after speaking with an independent school. You can read up on these below.
Perspective
Things aren’t always plain sailing, and your child may encounter difficult situations as they grow up. Whether it’s squabbles that they’ve had with their friends or a test that’s gone disastrously wrong, they can write about what’s happened to let it all out and reflect. Reflection is key as we can often make issues seem a lot bigger in our heads by dwelling on them. Journaling allows you to sit on them and also take a step back to see what they may look like from the point of view of an outsider.

Organisation
It’s easy to forget things and having a note of what you need to do makes it more likely that you will get them done. This is why when at school many of us were given homework diaries. There’s no reason as to why this can’t be applied to your personal life and children can use them to keep on top of their priorities outside of school. Inadvertently, by managing their time better outside of school, they may be able to improve academically by gaining more free time.
Fine Motor Skills
These are skills which we all have. They are needed to coordinate movements in the smaller muscles of the body such as those in the fingers and can be strengthened through regular writing.
